⤢ Full screenThus in the quiet joy of kindly trust,We bid each parting saint a brief farewell;Weeping, yet smiling, we commit their dustTo the safe keeping of the silent cell.
Softly within that peaceful resting-placeWe lay their wearied limbs, and bid the clayPress lightly on them till the night be past,And the far east give note of coming day.
The day of re-appearing! how it speeds! He who is true and faithful speaks the word:Then shall we ever be with those we love; Then shall we be forever with the Lord.
The shout is heard, the Archangel's voice goes forth; The trumpet sounds, the dead awake and sing; The living put on glory; one glad band,They hasten up to meet their coming King.
Short death and darkness! Endless life and light:Short climbing; endless shining in yon sphere,Where all is incorruptible and pure;—The joy without the pain, the smile without the tear.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «972» (large) in the left column below the stanzas of hymn 971, then in italics and brackets «[Tune, Eventide, No. 1121.]» (sing to the tune EVENTIDE, hymn 1121), then «10s.» in bold. Stanza 1 at the foot of the left column; stanzas 2–5 in the right column, beside the stanzas of hymn 971. Stanzas numbered «1»–«5» without a period (written «1.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book). The first word «THUS» is set in capitals and small capitals. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print; most verse lines run over the column width and are broken with an indented run-over — every verse is one line here, and «fare- / well;» (a word broken only by the line end) is joined. «Horatius Bonar.» in italics, right-aligned after stanza 5 (its last letter is blotted in this exemplar). The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («well ;», «darkness !», «re-appearing !», «speeds !», «word :», «love ;», «forth ;», «sing ;», «glory ;», «light :», «climbing ;», «pure ;—»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («Archangel's»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («re-appearing», «resting-place», «forever», «pure;—»).
