⤢ Full screenAwake! Jerusalem, awake! No longer in thy sins lie down; The garment of salvation take,Thy beauty and thy strength put on.
Shake off the dust that blinds thy sight,And hides the promise from thine eyes;Arise, and struggle into light; The great Deliverer calls, Arise!
Shake off the bands of sad despair;Zion, assert thy liberty;Look up, thy broken heart prepare,And God shall set the captive free.
Vessels of mercy, sons of grace,Be purged from every sinful stain;Be like your Lord, his word embrace,Nor bear his hallowed name in vain.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHURCH—ZEAL AND UNION.» (first page of this section of the book: «The Church — Zeal and Union», hymns 1011–1031 in the CONTENTS); hymn number «1011» (large), tune name «HEBER. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «EDWIN BARNES.» at the right in the composer slot (capitals and small capitals). Printed vertically in the LEFT margin, reading upward: «Copyrighted 1886» beside system 2 and «by Edwin Barnes.» beside system 1. Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Awake!»: «1. Awake! Je - ru - sa - lem, awake! No long - er in thy sins lie down;» under system 1 and «The garment of sal - va-tion take, Thy beau - ty and thy strength put on.» under system 2 («Awake!» and «garment» are printed as one word under two notes). The reference line «223, 301, 875.» in italic figures stands centred over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 223 BURTON, 301 ROCKINGHAM or 875 SESSIONS, all L. M.). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented. «Charles Wesley.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («awake !», «down ;», «eyes ;», «light ;», «Arise !», «despair ;», «liberty ;», «stain ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Deliverer», «Arise!» with its capital). A pen annotation «Chas Wesley» written by a former owner beside the hymn number is not part of the print (see uncertainties.md).
