1

How sweet, how heavenly is the sightWhen those that love the LordIn one another's peace delight,And thus fulfill his word.

2

When each can feel his brother's sigh,And with him bear a part; When sorrow flows from eye to eye,And joy from heart to heart.

3

When free from envy, scorn, and pride,Our wishes all above,Each can his brother's failings hide,And show a brother's love.

4

When love, in one delightful stream,Through every bosom flows; And union sweet, and dear esteem,In every action glows.

5

Love is a golden chain that bindsThe happy souls above,And he 's an heir of heaven who findsHis bosom glow with love.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHURCH—ZEAL AND UNION» (no final stop on this page; pp. 347 and 349 have one); hymn number «1014» (large), tune name «SILOAM. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «ISAAC B. WOODBURY» at the right in the composer slot (capitals and small capitals; the final Y is a broken sort and no stop follows it). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «How»: «1. How sweet, how heavenly is the sight When those that love the Lord» under system 1 («How» and «sweet,» set almost without a space; «heavenly» printed as one word under its two notes) and «In one an - oth - er's peace de-light, And thus ful - fill his word.» under system 2. The reference line «179, 395, 147.» in italic figures stands centred over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 179, 395 or 147). Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«5» without periods (written «2.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 are indented. «Joseph Swain.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «;» («part ;», «flows ;»); it is closed up here. «he 's» (stanza 5) is set with a word space before the apostrophe and is kept so. Two ink blots touch «glows» (stanza 4) and «chain» (stanza 5) without hiding a letter. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
