⤢ Full screenZion stands with hills surrounded,Zion, kept by power divine; All her foes shall be confounded,Though the world in arms combine:Happy Zion,—What a favored lot is thine!
Every human tie may perish,Friend to friend unfaithful prove,Mothers cease their own to cherish,Heaven and earth at last remove; But no changesCan attend Jehovah's love.
In the furnace God may prove thee,Thence to bring thee forth more bright,But can never cease to love thee;Thou art precious in his sight:God is with thee,—God, thine everlasting light.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1025» (large) in the left column of p. 351, under «Anon.» of hymn 1024, with the italic reference line «905, 772,» beside it (= sing to the tunes of hymns 905 or 772; the line ends with a comma, not a period). Three stanzas of six lines, numbered «1»–«3» without a period (numbered «1.»–«3.» here as in the other deliveries of this book): stanzas 1–2 at the foot of the left column, stanza 3 at the top of the right column (beside stanza 2 of hymn 1024; hymn 1024 has its own stanzas 2–4 in the left column, so this «3» continues 1025), then «Thomas Kelly.» in italics at the right, on the line above «1026». Lines 2, 4 and 6 are indented, line 5 further. The first word «ZION» is set in capitals and small capitals and is written «Zion» here. The print sets a thin space before some «;», «:» and «!» («remove ;», «thee ;», «sight :»); it is closed up here. Spelling («favored»), punctuation (the dashes in «Zion,—», «thee,—») and capitals are the print's; apostrophes are written straight («Jehovah's»). The meter is not printed (8s & 7s. 6l. / 8s, 7s & 4, like the referenced tunes).
