Come, and let us sweetly join

  • No. 1026
  • Metre 7s. D.
  • Tune Martyn
  • Words Charles Wesley.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Come, and let us sweetly join,Christ to praise in hymns divine;Give we all with one accordGlory to our common Lord;Hands, and hearts, and voices raise,Sing as in the ancient days,Antedate the joys above,Celebrate the feast of love.

2

Strive we, in affection strive,Let the purer flame revive,Such as in the martyrs glowed,Dying champions for their God:We like them may live and love;Called we are their joys to prove,Saved with them from future wrath,Partners of like precious faith.

3

Sing we, then, in Jesus' name,Now as yesterday the same; One in every time and place,Full of love, and truth, and grace:We for Christ, our Master, stand,Lights in a benighted land;We our dying Lord confess; We are Jesus' witnesses.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1026» (large) in the right column of p. 351, under «Thomas Kelly.» of hymn 1025; beside it the italic indication «[Tune, Martyn, No. 771.]» (= sing to MARTYN, hymn 771) and, at the right, the meter «7s. D.» («D.» in small capitals). Three stanzas of eight lines, numbered «1»–«3» without a period (numbered «1.»–«3.» here as in the other deliveries of this book), all lines at the same margin; «Charles Wesley.» in italics at the right after stanza 3, above the page number «351». The first word «COME» is set in capitals and small capitals and is written «Come» here. An ink blot covers the «ie» of «ancient» (stanza 1, line 6: «anci●nt»; the word is certain) and a speck follows the comma of «we,» (stanza 3, line 1). The print sets a thin space before some «;» and «:» («Lord ;», «love ;», «grace :», «land ;», «confess ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's; apostrophes are written straight («Jesus'»).
