Scorn not the slightest word or deed

  • No. 1048
  • Words Anon.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Scorn not the slightest word or deed,Nor deem it void of power; There's fruit in each wind-wafted seedThat waits its natal hour.

2

A whispered word may touch the heart,And call it back to life;A look of love bid sin depart,And still unholy strife.

3

Work on, despair not, bring thy mite,Nor care how small it be;God is with all that serve the right,The holy, true, and free.

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1048» (large) in the left column of p. 358, under hymn 1047 («Frederick W. Faber.»), with the reference line «201, 114, 204.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 201, 114 or 204 — LITCHFIELD, HOWARD, AVON, all C. M.; no meter is printed — the lines 8.6.8.6 are C. M.). Stanzas numbered «1»–«3» without a full stop (written «1.»–«3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented. The first word «SCORN» is set in a capital and small capitals; written «Scorn». «Anon.» in italics at the right under stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;» («power ;», «life ;», «be ;»); it is closed up here, and the curly apostrophe is written straight («There's»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
