⤢ Full screenWork, for the night is coming,Work through the morning hours;Work while the dew is sparkling,Work 'mid springing flowers.Work when the day grows brighter,Work in the glowing sun;Work, for the night is coming,When man's work is done.
Work, for the night is coming,Work through the sunny noon;Fill brightest hours with labor;Rest comes sure and soon.Give every flying minuteSomething to keep in store;Work, for the night is coming,When man works no more.
Work, for the night is comingUnder the sunset skies; While their bright tints are glowing,Work, for daylight flies.Work till the last beam fadeth,—Fadeth to shine no more;Work while the night is darkening,When man's work is o'er.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHURCH—MINISTRY AND MISSIONS.»; hymn number «1056» (large), tune name «WORK. 7s & 6s. P.» centred over the music (condensed capitals; the «P.» in a smaller size), «LOWELL MASON.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); printed vertically in the left margin beside system 2, «By per. O. Ditson & Co.». A pen annotation of the scanned copy («CH 446» beside the hymn number) is not printed and not transcribed. Stanza 1 is interlinear, one line per system, with «1.» before «Work»: system 1 = verse lines 1–3, system 2 = verse lines 4–6; verse line 7 is printed in italics as a second line under the end of system 1, preceded by «D. S.—» («D. S.—Work, for the night is com-ing,»), and verse line 8 in italics as a second line under the start of system 2 («When man's work is done.»); they are sung there after the «D. S.» at the end of system 2 (the music returns to the segno over «Work while» and ends at «Fine.» after «flowers.»). Stanza 1 below is assembled in the order sung. «coming», «morning», «sparkling», «springing», «brighter», «glowing» are set unbroken under the staves; «com-ing» is hyphenated in the italic line; «flowers.» stands under one note. No reference line is printed. Stanzas 2–3 follow as text in two columns, numbered «2», «3» (written «2.», «3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), with «Sidney Dyer.» in italics after stanza 3. Lines 2, 4, 6, 8 of each stanza are indented in the print. The print sets a thin space before «;» («hours ;», «noon ;», «labor ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («'mid», «man's», «o'er»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's (stanza 3, line 1 «Work, for the night is coming» has no comma at its end).
