⤢ Full screenWhen faint and weary toiling,The sweat-drops on my brow,I long to rest from labor,To drop the burden now,—There comes a gentle chiding,To quell each mourning sigh:"Work while the day is shining; There's resting by-and-by."
Resting by-and-by,There's resting by-and-by;We shall not always labor,We shall not always cry;The end is drawing nearer,The end for which we sigh; We'll lay our heavy burdens down; There's resting by-and-by.
This life to toil is given,And he improves it bestWho seeks by patient laborTo enter into rest; Then, pilgrim, worn and weary,Press on, the goal is nigh; The prize is straight before thee; There's resting by-and-by.
Nor ask when, overburdened,You long for friendly aid,"Why idle stands my brother,No yoke upon him laid?"The Master bids him tarry,And dare you ask him why?"Go labor in my vineyard,There's resting by-and-by."
Wan reaper in the harvest,Let this thy strength sustain,Each sheaf that fills the garnerBrings you eternal gain; Then bear the cross with patience,To fields of duty hie;'T is sweet to work for Jesus;—There's resting by-and-by.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHURCH—MINISTRY AND MISSIONS.»; hymn number «1057» (large), tune name «RESTING BY-AND-BY. 7s & 6s. P.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals, the «P.» smaller), «R. LOWRY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); printed vertically in the right margin beside system 4, reading downwards, «By per. Biglow & Main.». Stanza 1 is interlinear: in system 1, «1.» and a brace before two lines — «When faint and wea - ry toil - ing, The sweat-drops on my brow, I long to rest from la - bor, To» (sung the first time; it continues in system 2 with «drop the burden now,—», the first ending) and «There comes a gen - tle chid-ing, To quell each mourning sigh: "Work (omit.) . . . . . .» (sung on the repeat; «(omit.)» in italics under the first ending, followed by dots, also under «drop the burden now,—»); after the closing brace, «while the day is shining; There's resting by - and - by."» (second ending) and the chorus, headed «Chorus.» over the music: «Rest-ing by - and - by, There's rest - ing by-and-by; We shall not al - ways la - bor, We shall not al - ways cry; The end is draw-ing near-er, The end for which we sigh; We'll lay our heav - y bur-dens down; There's resting by - and - by.» (see `lyrics_syllables.txt`). The chorus is printed once, under the music, and is sung after every stanza. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in two columns below the music (stanza 3 runs from the foot of the left column to the top of the right column), numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), followed by «Sidney Dyer.» in italics; lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented. No reference line is printed (the hymn has its own tune). The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «?» («rest ;», «nigh ;», «sigh :», «laid ?», «why ?», «Jesus ;—»); it is closed up here. Quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight («"Work», «by."», «There's», «We'll», «'T is»); in «'T is» the print leaves a thin space after the «T» (kept, as in the other deliveries). Under the music «mourning», «burden», «shining» and «resting» (verse) are printed whole under two notes; «sweat-drops» is hyphenated as a compound. The owner's ink annotations over the header and in the left margin (see `uncertainties.md`) are not part of the print and are not transcribed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («labor», «overburdened», «hie»).
