Brother, you may work for Jesus

  • No. 1068
  • Words Anon.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Brother, you may work for Jesus;God has given you a placeIn some portion of his vineyard,And will give sustaining grace. He has bidden you to labor,And has promised a reward—Even joy and life eternalIn the kingdom of your Lord.

2

Brother, you may pray for Jesus,In your closet and at home,In the village, in the city,Or wherever you may roam;Pray that he will send the SpiritInto some dear sinner's heart,And that in his soul's salvationYou may bear some humble part.

3

Brother, you may sing for Jesus;O how precious is his love!Praise him for his boundless blessings,Ever coming from above;Sing how Jesus died to save you,How your sin and guilt he bore,How his blood hath sealed your pardon,—Sing for Jesus evermore.

4

Brother, you may live for Jesus,Him who died that you might live;O, then all your ransomed powersTo his service freely give; Thus for Jesus you may labor,And for Jesus sing and pray;Consecrate your life to Jesus—Love and serve him every day.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1068» (large) in the left column of p. 366, under hymn 1067 («Anon.»), with the reference line «844, 501, 499.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 844, 501 or 499 — GREENVILLE, AUTUMN, ELLESDIE, all 8s & 7s. D.; the line ends with a full stop). Stanza 1 stands in the left column, stanzas 2–4 in the right column; the stanzas are numbered «1»–«4» without a full stop (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2, 4, 6, 8 of each stanza are indented. The first word «BROTHER» is set in a capital and small capitals; written «Brother». «Anon.» in italics at the right under stanza 4, just above the page number «366». In this copy several words of stanza 1 (lines 4 and 6–8) and of stanzas 3–4 are retraced in ink by a reader, and a stroke runs down the left margin beside lines 5–6 of stanza 1; the printed words are all legible under the ink and are transcribed as printed (see uncertainties.md). The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («Jesus ;», «roam ;», «love !», «above ;», «live ;», «give ;», «pray ;»); it is closed up here, and the curly apostrophes are written straight («sinner's», «soul's»). Spelling («labor»), punctuation (the dashes «reward—», «pardon,—», «Jesus—») and capitals are the print's.
