1

Hark! the voice of Jesus calling,—"Who will go and work to-day?Fields are white, the harvest waiting;Who will bear the sheaves away?"Loud and long the Master calleth,Rich reward he offers free;Who will answer, gladly saying,"Here am I, O Lord, send me"?

2

If you cannot cross the oceanAnd the heathen lands explore,You can find the heathen nearer,You can help them at your door;If you cannot speak like angels,If you cannot preach like Paul,You can tell the love of Jesus,You can say he died for all.

3

If you cannot be the watchman,Standing high on Zion's wall,Pointing out the path to heaven,Offering life and peace to all; With your prayers and with your bountiesYou can do what heaven demands,You can be like faithful Aaron,Holding up the prophet's hands.

4

While the souls of men are dying,And the Master calls for you,Let none hear you idly saying,"There is nothing I can do!"Gladly take the task he gives you,Let his work your pleasure be;Answer quickly when he calleth,"Here am I, O Lord, send me."

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHURCH—MINISTRY AND MISSIONS.»; hymn number «1069» (large, left), tune name «FILLMORE. 8s & 7s. D.» centred over the music (condensed display capitals; «D.» in small capitals), «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); printed vertically in the left margin, reading upward, «Copyrighted 1886» (beside system 2) «by F. E. Belden.» (beside system 1). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Hark!»: system 1 = verse lines 1–3, system 2 = lines 4–6; lines 7–8 are printed in italics as a second line, «D. S.—Who will answer, gladly saying,» under the last two bars of system 1 and «"Here am I, O Lord, send me"?» under the first two bars of system 2, and are sung there after the «D. S.» at the end of the music (back to the segno, end at «Fine.»). Stanza 1 below is assembled in the order sung; its quotation marks open before «Who will go» (after «calling,—») and close after «away?», and the italic line 8 is printed with the question mark outside the closing quotation mark («send me"?»), all as printed. «to - day» is printed with a syllable break under the notes; the word is written «to-day» here, as the book spells it. The reference line «501, 844, 132.» in italic figures stands over stanza 2 (the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 501, 844 or 132). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column, numbered «2», «3», «4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), followed by «Daniel March.» in italics, right-aligned. Lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented in the print. Stanza 3, line 5 («With your prayers and with your bounties») runs to the column rule and has no punctuation at its end; it is kept without. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («door ;», «all ;», «do !», «be ;», «free ;»); it is closed up here. The curly apostrophes of «Zion's» and «prophet's» are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
