⤢ Full screen'T was on that dark, that doleful night,When powers of earth and hell aroseAgainst the Son, God's dear delight,And friends betrayed him to his foes:
Before the mournful scene began,He took the bread, and blessed and brake:What love through all his actions ran! What wondrous words of grace he spake!
"This is my body, broke for sin;Receive and eat the living food:"Then took the cup, and blessed the wine:"'T is the new covenant in my blood."
"Do this," he said, "till time shall end,—Meet at my table, and record,In memory of your dying Friend,The love of your departed Lord."
Jesus, thy feast we celebrate,We show thy death, we sing thy name,Till thou return, and we shall eatThe marriage supper of the Lamb.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1098» (large) in the right column of p. 374, below stanza 4 of hymn 1097 and «Isaac Watts.», with the reference line «929, 431, 316.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 929 WINDHAM, 431 HAMBURG or 316 OLDEN, all L. M.; no meter is printed — the lines 8.8.8.8 are L. M.). The first words «'T WAS» are set in capitals and small capitals, with a gap after the «'T» (written «'T was» here, as elsewhere in this book); «'T is» (stanza 3) is likewise set with a gap and written so. Stanzas numbered «1»–«5» without periods (written «1.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Stanza 2, lines 2 and 4 are set very tight to fit the column (only hair spaces in «He took», «bread, and», «of grace he»): the words are separate and are written with normal spaces here. The printer's thin space before «: ; !» («foes :», «brake :», «ran !», «spake !», «sin ;», «food :», «wine :») is closed up here; quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight. «Isaac Watts.» in italics, right-aligned after stanza 5. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
