⤢ Full screenWhat sound is this salutes my ear?'Tis Michael's trump methinks I hear;—Th' expected day has come.Behold, the heavens, the earth, the sea,Proclaim the year of Jubilee;Return, ye exiles, home.
Behold, the fair Jerusalem,Illuminated by the Lamb,In glory doth appear.Fair Zion rising from the tombsTo meet the Bridegroom: lo! he comes,And hails the festive year.
My soul is striving to be there;I long to rise and wing the air,And trace the sacred road.Adieu, adieu, all earthly things;O that I had an angel's wings!I'd quickly see my God.
Fly, lingering moments, fly, O fly!I thirst, I pant, I long to tryAngelic joys to prove!Soon I'll receive from Christ my LordEternal life, the great reward,And shout redeeming love.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «MISCELLANEOUS—OLD MELODIES.»; hymn number «1142» (large), tune title «WHAT SOUND IS THIS?» with the meter «C. P. M.» in the condensed display face, «ARRANGED.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). A handwritten name of the exemplar (in ink, cursive, apparently «Annie Smith») between the number and the title is not part of the print. Stanza 1 is interlinear, one line per system, with «1.» before «What»: «What sound is this sa - lutes my ear? 'Tis Mich-ael's trump me - thinks I hear, 'Tis Michael's trump me-» / «thinks I hear;—Th' expected day has come. Behold, the heavens, the earth, the sea, Pro-claim the year of Ju - bi - lee;»; under it, in italics, the line sung after the D. S.: «D. S.—Proclaim the year of» (system 1) / «Ju - bi-lee; Return, ye exiles, home.» (system 2). The music sings verse line 2 twice («'Tis Michael's trump methinks I hear,» … «I hear;—») and line 5 twice (before and after the D. S.); in stanza 1 below each verse line is written once, as in the text stanzas (line 2 with the punctuation of its second statement, «hear;—», which leads into line 3; the first statement ends «hear,»). Stanzas 2–4 follow as text in the left column, six lines each (lines 3 and 6 indented), numbered «2»–«4» without a full stop (numbered «2.»–«4.» here like stanza 1); «Anon.» in italics after stanza 4. The printer's thin space before «;», «:», «!» and «?» («ear ?», «there ;», «Bridegroom : lo !») is closed up here; apostrophes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
