Come on, my partners in distress

  • No. 1143
  • Words Anon.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Come on, my partners in distress,My comrades in the wilderness,Who still your burdens feel;Awhile forget your griefs and fears,And look beyond the vale of tearsTo yon celestial hill.

2

Look far beyond this narrow space,Look forward to that heavenly place. The saints' secure abode. On faith's strong eagle pinions rise,And wing your passage to the skies,Strong in the strength of God.

3

Who suffer with their Master here,Shall soon before his face appear,And by his side sit down:To patient faith the prize is sure,And all that to the end endureThe cross, shall wear the crown.

4

Thrice blessed, bliss-inspiring hope!It lifts the fainting spirit up!It brings to life the dead:Our conflicts here shall soon be past,And you and I ascend at last,Triumphant with our Head.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1143» (large) in the left column of p. 388, under hymn 1142, with the reference line «897, 874.» in italic figures beside it (= sing to the tune of hymn 897 ARIEL or 874 CHARDON, both C. P. M.; the second figure of «897» is a 9 at 12× — the page text layer reads «887», which is S. M. LISBON, the wrong meter). Stanza 1 stands at the foot of the left column (its first three lines) and continues at the top of the right column («Awhile forget your griefs and fears,» …), followed by stanzas 2–4 in the right column; «Anon.» in italics after stanza 4. The first word «COME» is set in a capital and small capitals. The stanzas are numbered «1»–«4» without a full stop (numbered «1.»–«4.» here); lines 3 and 6 of each stanza are indented. No meter is printed (the text is C. P. M., 8.8.6.8.8.6, like the two tunes of the reference line). The printer's thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («feel ;», «down :», «hope !») is closed up here; apostrophes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («distress» has a broken «i» in the exemplar).
