⤢ Full screenO hail, happy day, that speaks our trials ended; Our Lord has come to take us home,—O hail, happy day!No more by doubts or fears distressed,We now shall gain our promised rest,And be forever blest;O hail, happy day!
Swell loud the glad note, our bondage now is over,The jubilee proclaims us free,—O hail, happy day!The day that brings a sweet release,That crowns our Jesus Prince of peace,And bids our sorrows cease;—O hail, happy day!
O hail, happy day, that ends our tears and sorrows,That brings us joy without alloy,—O hail, happy day! There peace shall wave her scepter high,And love's fair banner greet the eye,Proclaiming victory;—O hail, happy day!
We hail thy bright beams, O morn of Zion's glory,Thy blessed light breaks on our sight,—O hail, happy day!Fair Beulah's fields before us rise,And sweetly burst upon our eyesThe joys of Paradise;—O hail, happy day!
Thrice hail, happy day, when earth shall smile in gladness,And Eden bloom o'er nature's tomb,—O hail, happy day!Where life's pure waters gently glide,Safe by the dear Redeemer's side,Forever we 'll abide;—O hail, happy day!
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1165» (large), tune name «HAIL, HAPPY DAY!» centred over the music (capitals and small capitals), «ARRANGED.» at the right (capitals and small capitals), no meter; running head «MISCELLANEOUS—OLD MELODIES.». Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one system per line of print, with «1.» before «O»; it is given below in the verse lines of the other stanzas. Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«5» without a period (written «2.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); in each, the first line runs over into a turnover («over,», «sorrows,», «glory,», «gladness,» — joined here into one verse line), and the refrain line «O hail, happy day!» is indented twice in the print. «Anon.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («ed ;», «day !», «cease ;—»); it is closed up here, and apostrophes are written straight («love's», «Zion's», «o'er», «we 'll» — the space before «'ll» is printed and kept, as in the other deliveries). Interlinear «trials», «distressed», «promised» are printed unhyphenated; «end - ed», «for - ev - er» are joined. Damaged letters read as the words they are: «fair» (stanza 3, the «r» broken), «fields» (stanza 4, the dot of the «fi» lost), and two «!» whose dot did not print (stanza 2 first refrain, stanza 5 last refrain). Spelling («scepter»), punctuation and capitals are the print's. No reference line: the hymn has its own tune.
