About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1164» (large), tune name «HALLOWELL. C. M.» centred (condensed capitals), «ARRANGED.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); under the number, in italics, «Other stanzas, No. 677.» — the remaining stanzas are those of hymn 677 («O for a faith that will not shrink», p. 220, tune NORTHFIELD, «William H. Bathurst.»). Only stanza 1 is printed here, between the staves, «1.» before «O»; no author is printed with this hymn. From bar 7 the voices enter one after another, each with its own lyric line: the soprano's (and the alto's) words between the staves, the tenor's in a second, smaller line between the staves, the bass's under the F staff (see `lyrics_syllables.txt`, which gives every line as printed). The stanza is given below with each verse line once, as in hymn 677; line 4 ends «woe;» where the fuguing section closes (bar 14) and «woe.» at the end of the hymn (bar 20) — the final form is given. This page prints «Tho' pressed» where hymn 677 prints «Though pressed». The tenor's line has «of pov-erty» in lower case (the other voices «Of»). «tremble» and «brink» are printed «tremhle», «hrink» (damaged «b») in the last system. The print sets a thin space before «;» («foe ;», «woe ;»); it is closed up here. A curved ink stroke of the exemplar around «No. 677.» is not printed and is not transcribed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
