⤢ Full screenThe Lord is my light; then why should I fear?By day and by night his presence is near;He is my salvation from sorrow and sin; This blessed persuasion the Spirit brings in.
The Lord is my light, my joy, and my song;By day and by night he leads me along; The Lord is my light, my joy, and my song;By day and by night he leads me along.
The Lord is my light; tho' clouds may arise,Faith, stronger than sight, looks up to the skiesWhere Jesus forever in glory doth reign:Then how can I ever in darkness remain?
The Lord is my light, the Lord is my strength,I know in his might I'll conquer at length; My weakness in mercy he covers with power,And, walking by faith, he upholds me each hour.
The Lord is my light, my all and in all; There is in his sight no darkness at all;He is my Redeemer, my Saviour and King; With saints and with angels his praises I sing.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: no running head; hymn number «1197» (large, left), «THE LORD IS MY LIGHT.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals); on the second header line «JAMES NICHOLSON.» (left, capitals and small capitals), the epigraph «"The Lord is my light and my salvation."—Ps. 27 : 1.» (centre; the «2» of «27» is an ink blot, read from its outline and the psalm quoted) and «DR. J. W. BISCHOFF.» (right, capitals and small capitals); «By permission.» under the last system. All four stanzas are interlinear, between the staves of systems 1–3, numbered «1.»–«4.»; «CHORUS.» stands over the third system and the chorus text is printed once — in system 3 on the second text line, after «re-main?», then alone in systems 4–5. Below, the syllables are joined into words and each stanza is set as its four verse lines (the staff lines break each verse line in the middle); the chorus follows every stanza by custom (the print gives no instruction). «Faith, stronger» and «sight, looks» are squeezed in the print (no space after the comma) and are spaced here; the printer's thin space before «;», «:» and «?» is closed up; «tho'» has a straight apostrophe. Stanza 3, line 2: the print has «I'il» (an «i» without its dot in place of the first «l»), kept as printed — see uncertainties.md. «up-holds» (stanza 3) is joined as «upholds» like the other syllable hyphens.
