⤢ Full screenThe home where changes never come,Nor pain nor sorrow, toil nor care;Yes! 'tis a bright and blessed home;Who would not fain be resting there?
O wait! meekly wait, and murmur not,O wait! meekly wait, and murmur not;O, wait! O wait! O, wait! and murmur not.
Yet when bowed down beneath the loadBy Heav'n allowed, thine earthly lot;Thou yearnst to reach that blest abode,Wait, meekly wait, and murmur not.
If in thy path some thorns are found,O, think who bore them on his brow;If grief thy sorrowing heart has found,It reached a holier than thou.
Toil on, nor deem, tho' sore it be,One sigh unheard, one pray'r forgot; The day of rest will dawn for thee!Wait, meekly wait, and murmur not.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1196» (large), title «Wait, and Murmur Not.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals); on the next line the epigraph «"But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it."—Rom. 8 : 25.» centred; under it «W. H. BELLAMY.» at the left (words) and «WM. J. KIRKPATRICK.» at the right (music), capitals and small capitals; no meter, no running head. At the foot, centred and bold: «From "Leaflet Gems," by per. John J. Hood.», then the folio «414». All four stanzas are interlinear, four lines between the staves of systems 1 and 2, numbered «1.»–«4.»; each stanza is four verse lines, given here as the verse lines of the poem (the staff break falls after «Yes!» / «Thou» / «If» / «The»). «CHORUS.» is printed over the treble staff at the start of system 3; its words stand once, in one line under the soprano, with a lower line of echoes sung by the other voices while the soprano holds «wait!»: «meek-ly wait,» four times (tenor and bass) and, at the end, «O, mur-mur not.» (alto and tenor). The chorus is given here once, after stanza 1, as printed; the echoes are not repeated in its text. Syllable hyphens are joined («chang-es», «nev - er», «sor-row», «bless - ed», «rest - ing», «a - bode», «meek-ly», «mur-mur», «ho - li - er», «for-got», «sorrow-ing»); «beneath», «allowed,», «earthly» (stanza 2) and «unheard,» (stanza 4) are printed whole under two notes. In stanza 2 the word «yearnst» is set in a different, condensed typeface from the rest of the line (it reads «yearnst» — see uncertainties.md). The print sets a thin space before «;», «!» and «?» («care ;», «Yes !», «thee !», «there ?», «wait !», «not ;»); it is closed up here. Straight apostrophes are used for the printer's curly ones («'tis», «Heav'n», «tho'», «pray'r»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («O wait!» without a comma and «O, wait!» with one, as printed).
