⤢ Full screenI am resting in the shadowOf the cross of Calvary;Long I shunned its shade inviting,Now so grateful unto me.Worldly gain and worldly pleasure—Once declared my joy to be—Are eclipsed beyond all measureWhile my dying Lord I see.
I am resting, sweetly resting:'Tis the safest place for meTo be resting in the shadowOf the cross of Calvary.
O 'twere hard thro' all life's journey,Toiling 'neath a burning sun,Hard to think no rest is offeredTill the long, long day is done.Hush! my heart, there is a solace,'Tis this precious thought to me:I will kneel, and rest a momentIn the shade of Calvary.
Rest is sweet to pilgrims weary,Earnest toil brings calm repose; They who wait for day's declining,Find no pleasure at its close.Rest not, then, though but a moment,In the shade that self may cast:Lift the Cross, and in its shadowFind eternal rest at last.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: no running head on p. 418 (the page opens with the hymn); hymn number «1200» (large, left), title «IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); under it, centred in two lines, the epigraph «"An hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land."—Isa. 32 : 1.»; «F. E. B.» at the left (words) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (music, capitals and small capitals); «With expression.» in italics over system 1. No meter and no reference line are printed (stanzas 8.7.8.7 D, refrain 8.7.8.7). The three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», in systems 1–4; «REFRAIN.» stands over system 5 and the refrain is printed once, its words once: «I am rest-ing, sweet-ly rest-ing: 'Tis the saf-est place for me» at the foot of p. 418, «To be rest-ing in the shad-ow Of the cross of Cal-va-ry.» in the first system of p. 419 under the heading «SHADOW OF THE CROSS.—Concluded.». The refrain is sung after every stanza. Under the music of p. 418, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.». In stanza 3, «CROSS» («Lift the CROSS») is set in capitals and small capitals; written «Cross» here. «declared» (stanza 1) is printed whole under two notes; the words divided under the notes are joined here («rest-ing», «e-clipsed», «Cal-va-ry» → «resting», «eclipsed», «Calvary»), the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. Each stanza is set in its eight verse lines (the print runs two verse lines on one staff line). The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («Cal-va-ry ;», «Hush !», «me :», «cast :»); it is closed up here. Apostrophes are written straight («'twere», «thro'», «life's», «'neath», «day's», «'Tis»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
