1

There is sunlight on the hill-top,There is sunlight on the sea;And the golden beams are sleeping,On the soft and verdant lea;But a richer light is fillingAll the chambers of my heart; For thou dwellest there, my Saviour,And 'tis sunlight where thou art.

REFRAIN

O the sunlight! beautiful sunlight!O the sunlight in the heart!Jesus' smile can banish sadness; It is sunlight in the heart.

2

In the dust I leave my sadness,As the garb of other days; For thou robest me with gladness,And thou fillest me with praise; And to that bright home of gloryWhich thy love hath won for me,In my heart and mind ascending,My glad spirit follows thee.

3

Loving Saviour, thou has bought me,And my life, my all, is thine;Let the lamp thy love hath lightedTo thy praise and glory shine; And to that bright home of gloryWhich thy love hath won for me,In my heart and mind ascending,My glad spirit follows thee.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1216» (large, left), title «SUNLIGHT IN THE HEART.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); under it the epigraph in one line, «"I will be glad and rejoice in thee."—Ps. 9 : 2.»; «MRS. M. T. HAUGHEY.» at the left and «MELODY BY M. T. HAUGHEY. ARRANGED.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); no meter, no reference line and no running head on the first page. The three stanzas are interlinear, «1.»–«3.» before the lines of system 1; in systems 3 and 4 the lines of stanzas 2 and 3 carry the same words, printed twice. The refrain, headed «REFRAIN.», is printed once (system 5 and, at the top of the next page under the running title «SUNLIGHT IN THE HEART.—Concluded.», system 6) and is sung after every stanza. «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.» is printed under the music of the first page, above the folio «434». The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («sea ;», «days ;», «heart ;», «sad - ness ;», «9 : 2»); it is closed up here. Words divided under the notes are joined («sun - light», «gold - en», «Sav - iour» → «sunlight», «golden», «Saviour»); «hill - top» is kept «hill-top» (see uncertainties.md). «bought me,» (stanza 3) is printed with almost no space («boughtme,»); two words. Each stanza is set in its eight verse lines and the refrain in four, each verse line beginning with a capital as printed (the print runs two verse lines on each staff line). Spelling («Saviour», «'tis», «robest», «thou has bought»), punctuation and capitals are the print's; apostrophes and quotation marks are written straight.
