⤢ Full screenThere's life in a look at the sacred cross,Jesus has said, "Look unto me;"Earth with its riches is only dross,Bright treasures beyond through the cross I see.
In a look there's life for thee,In a look at Calvary;Blessed thought, salvation free,By a look at Calvary (at Calvary).
I'll look to the cross ev'ry day and hour,Trusting the promise God has given;None ever fall neath the tempter's pow'rWhose-weapon is prayer, and whose strength is Heaven.
When first to the Saviour I raised my eyes,Sweet was the smile that fell on me;Oft as the clouds of temptation rise,A look at the cross still my strength shall be.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1217» (large, left), title «THERE'S LIFE IN A LOOK.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); on the next line «F. E. B.» at the left, the epigraph «"Look unto me, and be ye saved."—Isa. 45 : 22.» centred and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); no meter, no reference line and no running head for this hymn (the page opens with the concluding system of hymn 1216). The three stanzas are interlinear, «1.»–«3.» before the lines of system 1 (the «3.» prints like «8.»); the chorus, headed «CHORUS.», is printed once and is sung after every stanza. «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.» is printed under the music, above the folio «435». In the chorus the print has two lines of words: the soprano's (upper) line, with dots standing for the held notes, over the line of the alto, tenor and bass; the lower line stops at «By a look» and the last words «at Calvary (at Calvary).» — the parenthesis being the alto and tenor's echo — stand in the upper line only. The chorus is given below in the words of the lower line, completed from the upper line; the upper line follows it. Each printed line of words carries two verse lines; they are given here one verse line per line. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («me ;», «given ;», «45 : 22.»); it is closed up here. Apostrophes and quotation marks are written straight. Words divided under the notes are joined («sa-cred», «Je - sus», «ev - 'ry», «Sav - iour», «rich - es», «on - ly», «ev - er», «temp-ta - tion», «weap - on», «Cal - va - ry», «sal - vation»). Stanza 2, verse 4 is printed «Whose-weap - on» with a hyphen between «Whose» and «weapon»; it is kept as printed (see uncertainties.md). Several words in the second half of systems 1-2 («Bright treasures», «Whose-weapon is prayer, and whose strength is Heaven.», «strength shall be.») and parts of the chorus lines are set in a smaller condensed bold type (tight lines); not marked here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Saviour», «neath», «pow'r», «Heaven»).
