⤢ Full screenI left it all with Jesus, long ago (long ago); All my sins I brought him, and my woe (and my woe); When by faith I saw him bleeding on the tree (on the tree);Heard his still small whisper, "'Tis for thee!"From my weary heart the burden rolled away:Happy day! happy day! happy day! From my weary heart the burden rolled away (rolled away);Happy day! happy day (happy day).
I leave it all with Jesus, for he knows (for he knows)How to steal the bitter from life's woes (from life's woes); How to gild the tear of sorrow with his smile (with his smile),Make the desert garden bloom awhile. Then with all my weakness leaning on his might,All is light! all is light! all is light! Then with all my weakness leaning on his might (on his might),All is light! all is light (all is light).
I leave it all with Jesus, day by day (day by day);Faith can firmly trust him, come what may (come what may);Hope has dropp'd for aye her anchor, found her rest (found her rest); In the calm, sure haven of his breast.Love esteems it joy of heaven to abideAt his side! at his side! at his side!Love esteems it joy of heaven to abide (to abide),At his side! at his side (at his side).
O, leave it all with Jesus, drooping soul (drooping soul),Tell not half thy story, but the whole (but, the whole);Worlds on worlds are hanging ever on his hand (on his hand);Life and death are waiting his command.Yet his tender, loving mercy makes thee room:O come home! O come home! O come home!Yes, his tender, loving mercy makes thee room (makes thee room),O come home! O come home (O come home).
About this hymn
As printed As printed: no running head on p. 440 (the page opens with the hymn); hymn number «1222» (large, left), title «I LEFT IT ALL WITH JESUS.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); under it, in one line, the epigraph «"Casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you."—1 Pet. 5 : 7.» (a comma after «him»; old-style figures); on the next line «MRS. E. H. WILLIS.» at the left (words) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (music), both in capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title and no reference line are printed. The hymn fills p. 440 (five systems) and runs on to the top of p. 441 under the heading «I LEFT IT ALL WITH JESUS.—Concluded.» (one system). All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.» before the first syllable, and each runs under all six systems: there is no separate chorus — the closing lines («Happy day!», «All is light!», «At his side!», «O come home!») belong to each stanza. The words in parentheses are echoes, printed inside the lines in a smaller condensed type: they are sung by the tenor and bass (in the last line by the alto and tenor) while the melody holds its note. Under the held notes of «away: . . Happy day! . .» (and the same place of the other stanzas) the print sets spaced dots; they mark the held syllable and are not reproduced here (they are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`). Under the music of p. 440, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.». Each stanza is given here in its eight verse lines (the print runs it on under the staves); words divided under the notes are joined («Je - sus», «a - go», «droop-ing», «bit - ter», «firm - ly», «sto - ry», «hang-ing», «bleed - ing», «sor - row», «an - chor», «ev - er», «whis-per», «des - ert», «gar - den», «ha - ven», «wait - ing», «wea - ry», «bur - den», «a - way», «weak-ness», «lean - ing», «es - teems», «heav - en», «a - bide», «ten-der», «lov - ing», «mer - cy», «Hap - py» → «Jesus», «ago», «drooping», «bitter», «firmly», «story», «hanging», «bleeding», «sorrow», «anchor», «ever», «whisper», «desert», «garden», «haven», «waiting», «weary», «burden», «away», «weakness», «leaning», «esteems», «heaven», «abide», «tender», «loving», «mercy», «Happy»); «a-» at the end of the third system and «while.» at the head of the fourth are one word, «awhile.», and so «com-» / «mand.» → «command.». Stanza 4, line 2: the mark after «but» in the echo is read as a comma (see `uncertainties.md`). The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («a - go) ;», «a - way :», «side !»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight («"'Tis for thee!"», «life's», «dropp'd»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
