⤢ Full screenO now I see the crimson wave,The fountain deep and wide;Jesus, my Lord, mighty to save,Points to his wounded side.
The cleansing stream I see, I see,I plunge, and O, it cleanseth me!O praise the Lord! it cleanseth me,It cleanseth me, yes, cleanseth me.
I see the new creation rise,I hear the speaking blood;It-speaks,—polluted nature dies,Sinks 'neath the cleansing flood.
I rise to walk in heav'n's own light,Above the world and sin; With heart made pure and garments white,And Christ enthroned within.
Amazing grace! 'tis heav'n belowTo feel the blood applied,And Jesus, only Jesus, know,My Jesus crucified.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1235» (large, left), title «THE CLEANSING WAVE.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «The Cleansing Wave.»); under it the epigraph in one full-width line (old-style figures «1 John 1 : 7.»); on the next line «MRS. PHŒBE PALMER.» at the left (words, capitals and small capitals, with the Œ ligature) and «MRS. JOS. F. KNAPP,» at the right (music; the final mark looks like a comma). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–2; «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3, and the chorus words are printed once, one line under system 3 and one under system 4; the chorus is sung after every stanza. Each printed line of words carries two verse lines (the stanza) or two chorus lines; they are given here one verse line per line. Stanza 2 is printed «It-speaks,—» with a short hyphen between «It» and «speaks» (kept as printed; a printer's slip for «It speaks,—»). «garments» (stanza 3), «cleansing» and the last «cleanseth» (chorus) are printed whole under two notes. The lines are tightly set («A - maz - inggrace !», «inheav'n'sownlight,», «Withheartmadepure»); normal word spaces are written. Under the music, centred: «By permission.» The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («wide ;», «grace !», «me !», «Lord !») and before the comma of «O ,»; it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's («heav'n's», «heav'n», «'tis», «'neath»).
