1

They dreamed not of danger, those sinners of old,Whom Noah was chosen to warn;By frequent transgression their hearts had grown cold; They laughed his entreaties to scorn:Yet daily he called them, "O come, sinners, come,Believe, and prepare to embark!Receive the glad message, and know there is roomFor all who will come to the Ark,"Receive the glad message, and know there is roomFor all who will come to the Ark."

Chorus.

Then come, no more delaying,The gracious call obeying;O hear the Spirit saying,"There's room for you to-day."To-day the word believing,To-day the truth receiving,No more the Spirit grieving,—O enter while you may.

2

He could not arouse them; unheeding they stood,Unmoved by his warning and prayer; The prophet passed in from the oncoming flood,And left them to hopeless despair:The flood-gates were opened, the deluge came on,The heavens as midnight grew dark,Too late, then they turned—ev'ry foothold was gone,They perished in sight of the Ark,Too late, then they turned, ev'ry foot-hold was gone,They perished in sight of the Ark.

3

O sinners, the heralds of mercy implore,They cry like the patriarch, "Come;"The Ark of salvation is moored to your shore,O enter while yet there is room! The storm-cloud of Justice rolls dark over head,And when by its fury you're tossed,Alas, of your perishing souls 't will be said,"They heard—they refused—and were lost."Alas, of your perishing souls 't will be said,"They heard—they refused—and were lost!"

4

*4. And now while this message—"Christ's coming is near"—God's servants by thousands proclaim,Say not like those sinners of old, with a sneer,"All things shall continue the same."The prophets have spoken; their words are unsealed; The judgment will shortly be o'er;The arm of God's justice will soon be revealed,And mercy invite you no more,The arm of God's justice will soon be revealed,And mercy invite you no more.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: the hymn number «1274» (large, left) and the title «OUT OF THE ARK.» centred (condensed capitals with taller initials O, A); under it the epigraph in one line, «"But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."—Matt. 24 : 37.»; on the next line «KATE HARRINGTON, ARR.» at the left (words), «[May be sung as a Solo.]» in the middle (square brackets) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (music), the names in capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title and no reference line are printed. The four stanzas are interlinear in the five systems of p. 490, numbered «1.», «2.», «3.» and «*4.» (an asterisk before the number of the fourth); at the foot of p. 490 «*Added.» in italics at the left and «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.» in the middle. The last couplet of every stanza is printed twice, under systems 4 and 5, with different punctuation (and «foothold» / «foot-hold», «per - ishing» / «per-ish-ing»); both are given, as sung. The CHORUS is at the top of p. 491, under «OUT OF THE ARK.—Concluded.»: «CHORUS.» over the treble, two lines in a brace sung with the repeat — line 1 with the first ending «1st.» («…"There's room for you to-day."»), line 2 with «(omit.)» in italics and six leader dots under the first ending and, after the closing brace, «en - ter while you may.» under the second ending «2d.»; the chorus is sung after every stanza, line 1 then line 2. Each verse line is one line here; the verse lines are long and the print runs two of them across each system (a capital marks the start of each: «Whom», «By», «They», «Yet», «Be-», «Re-», «For» …). The words divided under the notes are joined here («dan - ger», «sin-ners», «No - ah», «chos - en», «A - las», «per - ishing», «de - lay - ing», «Spir - it» … → «danger», «sinners», «Noah», «chosen», «Alas», «perishing», «delaying», «Spirit»); the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. Hyphens that belong to the word are kept («flood-gates», «storm-cloud», «foot-hold» in the repeat of stanza 2, «To-day», «to-day»); «o - ver head,» is printed as two words and kept so. In stanza 3 «and were lost.» / «and were lost!» are in italics in the print. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:», «!» («warn ;», «scorn :», «room !») and in «24 : 37»; it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight («ev'ry», «'t will», «you're», «o'er», «Christ's»). «'t will» is set with a word space after the apostrophe-t and kept so. Spelling, punctuation and capitals («Justice», «Ark», «Spirit») are the print's; «proph-et» has a broken «e» in the print (see `uncertainties.md`). In this file «*» before the 4 and before «Added.» is the printed asterisk (escaped for Markdown).
