About this hymn

As printed As printed: no running head on p. 502 (the page opens with the hymn); hymn number «1288» (large, left), title «Lift! Brother, Lift!» centred (condensed display capitals and small capitals: «L», «B», «L» full capitals); under it, on one line, the epigraph «"If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."—Matt. 16 : 24.» (roman, old-style figures); on the next line «F. E. B.» at the left (words) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (music, capitals and small capitals); «Spirited.» in italics over the first bar. No meter, no tune name other than the title and no reference line are printed. The three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.» «2.» «3.» before the first syllable of system 1, and run through system 1 and the first three bars of system 2; «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over the fourth bar of system 2, and the chorus words are printed once — «Lift the cross and clasp it tighter,» on the level of the stanza-2 line of system 2, the rest on one line under system 3; the chorus is sung after every stanza. Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by The J. E. White Pub. Co.» (the year's middle figures are smeared; 1886 read). Each printed line of words follows the staff, not the verse; the stanzas are given here in their four verse lines and the chorus in four. The words divided under the notes are joined here («car - ry», «Du - ty's», «de - nying», «e - vil», «bat-tle», «nev - er», «tar - ry», «try-ing» → «carry», «Duty's», «denying», «evil», «battle», «never», «tarry», «trying»); the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. «self - de - nying» is given as «self-denying» (the compound keeps one hyphen; the print cannot show which hyphen is the word's own). The print sets a thin space before «!» («Lift !», «lift !») and around the colon of the reference («16 : 24»); it is closed up here; the curly apostrophes are written straight («Duty's», «O'er»). Spelling, capitals («brother» in lower case after «Lift!») and punctuation are the print's.
