1

I am coming to the cross,I am poor, and weak, and blind;I am counting all but dross,I shall full salvation find.D. C.—I am trusting, Lord, in thee,O thou Lamb of Calvary!Humbly at thy cross I bow,Save me, Jesus, save me now.

2

Long my heart has sighed for thee,Long has evil reigned within;Jesus sweetly speaks to me,"I will cleanse you from all sin."

3

Here I give my all to thee,Friends and time and earthly store;Soul and body thine to be,Wholly thine forevermore.

4

In thy promises I trust,Now I feel the blood applied;I am prostrate in the dust,I with Christ am crucified.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1289» (large, left), title «I am Coming to the Cross.» centred (condensed display capitals and small capitals: «I», «C», «C» full capitals; final period); on the next line «REV. WM. MCDONALD.» at the left (words, capitals and small capitals), the epigraph «"They forsook all, and followed him."—Luke 5 : 11.» in the middle (roman, old-style figures) and «WM. G. FISCHER.» at the right (music). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no tempo word and no reference line are printed. The four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.» before the first syllable of system 1: lines 1–2 of each stanza under system 1, lines 3–4 under system 2. Under the BASS staff of each system, in italics, the refrain sung after the «D. C» (bold, without a final period, over the end of system 2): «D. C.—I am trust - ing, Lord, in thee, O thou Lamb of Cal - va - ry!» (system 1) and «Hum - bly at thy cross I bow, Save me, Je - sus, save me now.» (system 2); no «Fine» is printed, so the whole tune is sung again with the refrain after every stanza. Under the music, centred: «By permission.», then the folio «502». The words divided under the notes are joined here («com - ing», «e - vil», «with - in», «earth - ly», «prom - is - es», «ap - plied», «count - ing», «sal - va - tion», «Je - sus», «sweet - ly», «bod - y», «Whol-ly», «for - ev - er - more», «pros - trate», «cru - ci - fied», «trust - ing», «Cal - va - ry», «Hum - bly» → «coming», «evil», «within», «earthly», «promises», «applied», «counting», «salvation», «Jesus», «sweetly», «body», «Wholly», «forevermore», «prostrate», «crucified», «trusting», «Calvary», «Humbly»); the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. Stanza 3, line 3 prints «Souland» without a word space (the compositor's spacing): «Soul and». The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («blind ;», «Cal-va-ry !») and around the colon of the reference («5 : 11»); it is closed up here; the curly quotation marks are written straight. Spelling, capitals (the pronouns «thee», «thy», «thine», «thou» in lower case) and punctuation are the print's.
