About this hymn
As printed As printed: the hymn number «1314» (large, left) and the title «OPEN THOU MINE EYES.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); under it the epigraph in one line, «"Open thou mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law."—Ps. 119 : 18.»; on the next line «[Anthem.]» in the middle (square brackets) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (music; capitals and small capitals); nothing at the left (no author of the words — they are Scripture). No meter, no tune name other than the title and no reference line are printed. The music runs over p. 524 (seven systems) and the top of p. 525 (three systems, under «OPEN THOU MINE EYES.—Concluded.»); «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.» is at the foot of p. 524. One text, set as an anthem and sung once. The first system is repeated: two lines in a brace — line 1 with the first ending «1st.» («…out of thy law,»), line 2 with «(omit.)» in italics and two leader dots under the first ending and, after the closing brace, «out of thy law.» for the second ending «2d.». The words «Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts» are sung by the upper voices alone (systems 2 and 5) and by the lower voices alone (systems 2 and 6), the other staff silent. In the last system of p. 524 and the first of p. 525 the tenor and bass have a second, lower line of words, «the wondrous things,» (three times), sung against «…thy law,» of the upper voices; it is given below in its place, indented (the indent marks the lower line; nothing is added to the words). The text is set as prose; it is given here one phrase per line, breaking where the print's punctuation and the music's cadences close a phrase (see `uncertainties.md`). The words divided under the notes are joined here («O - pen», «com-mand - ed», «pre - cepts», «com - mand-ments», «there - in», «In- / cline» across two systems, «de - light», «stat - utes», «be - hold», «won-drous», «A - men» → «Open», «commanded», «precepts», «commandments», «therein», «Incline», «delight», «statutes», «behold», «wondrous», «Amen»); the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:», «!» («pre - cepts ;», «law :», «Lord !») and in «119 : 18»; it is closed up here; curly quotes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals («That I may behold», «O Lord») are the print's.
