⤢ Full screenAre you doers of the word, O my brothers? Are you keepers of the sayings of the Lord? All in vain are your professions, O my brothers! If you be not doers of the word.
Are you doers (of the word)? Are you doers (of the word)? For our hearing without doing is in vain;Christ has told us,—will you heed it, O my brothers!—We must do if the blessing we would gain.
Are you doers of the word, O my brothers? Are you walking in the footsteps of the Lord? You are building on the quicksands, O my brothers!
Are you doers of the word, O my brothers? Are you keeping the commandments of the Lord?Do not tell me of your feelings, O my brothers!
Are you doers of the word, O my brothers? Are you looking for the coming of the Lord? All in vain your expectations, O my brothers!
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1317» (large, left), title «ARE YOU DOERS OF THE WORD?» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials; a thin space before «?», closed up here); under it the epigraph «"Be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only."—James 1 : 22.» centred (old-style figures); on the next line «H. R. TRICKETT,» at the left (words — the print ends the name with a comma, kept) and «J. H. FILLMORE.» at the right (music), capitals and small capitals. No meter, no reference line, no running head. The four stanzas are interlinear, four lines between the staves of systems 1–2, numbered «1.»–«4.» in system 1; each stanza is three verse lines, given here as the verse lines of the poem (the staff break falls inside the second verse line: «keep-ers of the / say-ings», «walk-ing in the / footsteps», «com- / mand-ments», «for the / com-ing»; in stanza 3 «mand-ments» is set in a small condensed type). The line «If you be not doers of the word.» follows the four stanza lines once, in one line under the start of system 3, and is sung after every stanza; it is given here once, after stanza 1. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over the treble in the middle of system 3; the chorus words are printed once, one line for all voices, and are given here once, after stanza 1. The words in parentheses, «(of the word)?», are the echo of alto, tenor and bass while the soprano holds its note; they stand inside the line, exactly where the print has them. Stanza 2, second verse line: a comma-shaped sort is printed before «Are» («brothers? ,Are you») — kept as printed. Stanza 3: a blot after «tell» and a speck after «O» are not punctuation. Syllable hyphens are joined («do-ers», «keep-ers», «say-ings», «walk-ing», «com-mand-ments», «look-ing», «com-ing», «pro-fes-sions», «build-ing», «feel-ings», «ex-pec-ta-tions», «hear-ing», «with-out», «do-ing», «bless-ing»). The print sets a thin space before «?», «!» and «;» («brothers ?», «brothers !», «vain ;»); it is closed up here; curly quotes are written straight. Under the music, centred: «From "Grateful Praise," by permission.» and the page number «528». Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («word» lower-case in the song, «Word» in the epigraph; «Lord»; «Christ»).
