About this hymn
As printed As printed (two pages): on PDF 527 (printed 526) the hymn number «1316» (large, left) and the title «HEAR THE CONCLUSION.» centred (capitals and small capitals); under it the epigraph in three lines of small type, «"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter : Fear God and keep his commandments ; for this is the whole / duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether / it be evil."—Eccl. 12 : 13.» — the reference names verse 13 only although the quotation runs on into verse 14; kept as printed — with «[Anthem.]» in the middle of the third line and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); no author of the words is printed. At the foot of PDF 527, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.». PDF 528 (printed 527) is headed «HEAR THE CONCLUSION.—Concluded.»; over its fourth system, in italics: «1st. time,—Soprano and Alto duet. 2d. time,—Tenor and Base.» («Base» so spelled), and under the words «e - vil.» of the first ending «[omit.]» in italics in square brackets (sing the first ending the first time only). No meter, no stanza numbers, no refrain: an anthem in prose. The words are one line between the staves; the answering voices have their own words in small type — under the treble staff for the alto, under the bass staff for the bass («For this is the du-ty», «For this is the du - ty,» on PDF 527; «Fear God, fear God,» twice each on PDF 528); they are given below, after the main text, as printed. PDF 528 system 4 («For God shall bring … good or») is set in a condensed bold face. Lines here follow the musical phrases (the print runs the prose across the systems; each new phrase begins with a capital in the print); the joins across system breaks are «con- / clusion» (527 S1-S2, the second part printed unhyphenated), «com- / mandments» (528 S2-S3) and the page turn «con-clu-sion, / Hear the con-clu-sion» (527-528). The words divided under the notes are joined («con-clu-sion», «mat-ter», «du-ty», «com-mandments», «se-cret», «Wheth-er», «e-vil», «A-men», «ev-'ry» / «ev'-ry» → «conclusion», «matter», «duty», «commandments», «secret», «Whether», «evil», «Amen», «ev'ry»); the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. The leader dots of «man . . . the» (527 system 3, where soprano and tenor hold «man» while alto and bass sing «For this is the du-ty») are kept. The print sets a thin space before «:» and «;» («mat-ter :», «mandments ;», «law ;», «e-vil ;»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
