⤢ Full screenCalled to the feast by the King are we,Sitting, perhaps, where his people be;How will it fare, friend, with thee and meWhen the King comes in?
When the King comes in, brother,When the King comes in!How will it fare with thee and meWhen the King comes in?
Crowns on the head where the thorns have been,Glorified he who once died for men;Splendid the vision before us then,When the King comes in.
Like lightning's flash will that instant showThings hidden long from both friend and foe;Just what we are will each neighbor know,When the King comes in.
Joyful his eye shall on each one restWho is in white wedding garments dressed;Ah! well for us if we stand the test,When the King comes in.
Endless the sad separation then,Bitter the cry of deluded men,Awful that moment of anguish whenChrist the King, comes in.
Lord, grant us all, we implore thee, grace,So to await thee each in his place,That we may fear not to see thy faceWhen thou comest in.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1319» (large, left), title «WHEN THE KING COMES IN.» centred (capitals and small capitals, «When the King Comes In.»). Under it the epigraph in small type, in two lines: «"Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom / prepared for you from the foundation of the world."—Matt. 25 : 34.» On the next line «J. E. LANDOR.» at the left (words) and «REV. E. S. LORENZ.» at the right (music), capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line, no running head, no tempo or dynamic marks. The six stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«6.», between the staves of systems 1–2; the last line of each stanza is printed in a block of six lines at the start of system 3 (one line per stanza, in order). «REFRAIN.» (bold capitals) stands over the middle of system 3; the refrain words are printed once, as one running line («When the King comes in, brother, When the King comes / in! How will it fare with thee and me When the King comes in?»). The verse lines are given here one verse line per line (joined across the system break: «where his / people be;», «who once / died for men;», «from both / friend and foe;», «wedding / garments dressed;», «de- / luded men,», «each / in his place,», and in the refrain «When the King comes / in!»). Under the music, centred: «From "Songs of Grace," by permission.» The print sets a thin space before «;», «!» and «?» in places («be ;», «men ;», «Ah !», «in ?»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
