⤢ Full screenWhen Jesus shall gather the nations,Before him at last to appear,Then how shall we stand in the Judgment,When summoned our sentence to hear?
He will gather the wheat in his garner,But the chaff will he scatter away; Then how shall we stand in the JudgmentOf the great resurrection day?
Shall we hear, from the lips of the Saviour,The words "Faithful servant, well done,"Or, trembling with fear and with anguish,Be banished away from his throne?
He will smile when he looks on his children,And sees on the ransom'd his seal;He will clothe them in heavenly beauty,As low at his footstool they kneel.
Then let us be watching and waiting,With lamps burning steady and bright; When the Bridegroom shall call to the weddingO may we be ready for flight!
Thus living with hearts fixed on heaven,In patience we wait for the timeWhen the days of our pilgrimage ended,We'll bask in the presence divine.
About this hymn
As printed As printed on p. 531 (PDF 532): hymn number «1320» (large) at the left, title «HE WILL GATHER THE WHEAT IN HIS GARNER.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals); under it the epigraph in one line of smaller roman (given below; the thin spaces before «;» and around the colon of the reference closed up); «HARRIET B. M'KEEVER.» (the words) at the left and «JNO. R. SWENEY.» (the music) at the right, both in capitals and small capitals; «CHORUS.» in bold capitals above the third system; «From "The Garner," by per. John J. Hood.» centred under the music (no space after «From» in the print), folio «531» below it. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. The five stanzas are interlinear between the staves of the first two systems, numbered «1.»–«5.» in system 1; the CHORUS is printed once (systems 3–4) and is sung after every stanza. Each printed line of words carries two verse lines; they are given here one verse line per line, by the rhymes (nations/Judgment, appear/hear; Saviour/anguish, done/throne; children/beauty, seal/kneel; waiting/wedding, bright/flight; heaven/ended, time/divine) and the capitals that open them. Words divided under the notes are joined («Je - sus», «gath - er», «na - tions», «Be - fore», «ap - pear», «Sav - iour», «serv - ant», «chil - dren», «wait - ing», «liv - ing», «heav - en», «sum - moned», «sen - tence», «trem - bling», «an - guish», «a - way», «heav - en - ly», «beau - ty», «Bride - groom», «wed - ding», «read - y», «pil - grim - age», «end - ed», «pres - ence», «di - vine»; chorus «gath - er», «gar - ner», «scat - ter», «a - way», «Judg - ment», «res - ur - rec - tion»). Stanza 2's «Faithful serv-ant, well done,», stanza 4's «bright;» and «Bride-groom» and stanza 1's «sum-moned» are set in a narrower condensed bold type to fit (lower case, not small capitals); they are written in plain letters here. The print sets a thin space before «;», «?» and «!»; it is closed up here; the apostrophes are written straight («ransom'd», «We'll», «M'Keever»). Spelling («Saviour», «Judgment»), capitals («Bridegroom», «Judgment») and punctuation are the print's: stanza 4, line 3 ends «wedding» with no stop, and stanza 5, line 2 ends «time» with no stop, as printed.
