Sweet promise,—"I will come again;Go preach this gospel to all men;""Come quickly, Lord," my soul doth say,"And bring that happy day:"

Chorus.

Happy day, O happy day!Happy day, O happy day!Happy day, O happy day! happy day,Happy day, O happy day! happy day;Come quickly Lord, no more delay;Come quickly, happy day.

2

The righteous dead shall then arise,With living saints ascend the skies; And Satan in this vale of tearsBe bound a thousand years.

3

The city bright shall then appear,The wicked then be raised to hearThe Judge's awful sentence dire,And earth shall melt with fire.

4

Then shall it blossom as of old,In beauty glorious to behold; And sin and death be found no moreOn that immortal shore.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1331» (large, left), title «HAPPY DAY.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Happy Day.»); under it, centred, the epigraph «"Unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings."—Mal. 4 : 2.» (old-style figures); on the next line «F. E. B.» at the left (the words) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (the music, capitals and small capitals). No meter, no reference line. All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–2; each printed line of words carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3; the chorus is printed once, with two lines of words in system 3 and the first bar of system 4: the upper line, sung by soprano and alto in long notes, with dots where the syllable «day,» is held («Hap-py day, . . . O happy day! Happy day, O happy»), and the lower line, set to the right of it and sung at the same time by tenor and bass («Happy day, O happy day! happy day, Happy day, O happy»); in system 4 the upper line ends «day!» and the lower line «day! happy day;», and then one line serves all voices («Come quickly Lord, no more de-lay; Come quickly, happy day.»). The chorus is given here once, after stanza 1: first the line of soprano and alto (the held dots left out), then the line of tenor and bass, then the two lines sung by all. Syllable hyphens are joined («prom-ise», «right-eous», «a-gain», «gos-pel», «liv-ing», «cit-y», «ap-pear», «wick-ed», «blos-som», «beau-ty», «glo-rious», «be-hold», «quick-ly», «hap-py», «Sa-tan», «aw-ful», «sen-tence», «im-mor-tal», «de-lay»); stanza 3 divides «Judg-e's», given here as «Judge's». Stanza 1 has a comma after «quickly» («"Come quickly, Lord,"»), the chorus none («Come quickly Lord,»). The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («again ;», «men ;"», «day !», «4 : 2»); it is closed up here; curly quotes are written straight. Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.». Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
