Come, Saviour, Come

O'er all the land have the signs now appeared,

  • No. 1333
  • Tune COME, SAVIOUR, COME.
  • Words W. C. Gage.
  • Music Henry C. Work.
  • Key D major
  • Singing key B♭ major
  • Time 2/4
  • 4 stanzas
1

O'er all the land have the signs now appeared,Telling us soon our dear Saviour will come;Long has the worn pilgrim watched, hoped, and feared,Waiting for that blessed hope; O come, Saviour, come.

2

Signs in the sun and the moon and the stars,Faithfully show that the great day is near;Nations distressed by the rumors of wars,And the hearts of wicked men are failing for fear.

3

These, to the pilgrim, are omens of cheer,Toiling and sighing in life's gloomy way; All, all proclaim that the Saviour is near,And the light is dawning of that soon-coming day.

4

Then let us rally, and fresh courage take;Soon will we hear our dear Lord's loving voice; Those who will now all their errors forsake,Soon the pearly gates will enter;—sing and rejoice.

Chorus.

Sound forth the tidings, long, loud, and clear;Jesus is coming, and soon will appear;

5

D. S.—All hearts respond as we long for our home,"Quickly come, O blessed Jesus, come, Saviour, come."

About this hymn

As printed As printed: no running head on p. 544 (the page opens with the hymn); hymn number «1333» (large, left), title «Come, Saviour, Come.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals); under it the epigraph in three lines of small roman, «"And there shall be signs in the sun, ... which are coming on the earth."—Luke 21 : 25, 26.» (old-style figures); on the next line «W. C. GAGE.» at the left (words) and «HENRY C. WORK.» at the right (music), both in capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–3 (up to «Fine.»); «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over the end of system 3, and the chorus words are printed once, under systems 3–4 («Sound forth the tid-ings,» on the second lyric row of system 3). Under the bass staff of systems 2–3, in italics, the words sung after the «D. S.» (from the segno to «Fine.»): «D. S.—All hearts re - spond as we long for our home, / "Quick - ly come, O bless - ed Je - sus, come, Sav-iour, come."» Under the music, centred: «Music by permission S. Brainard's Sons.». Each printed line of words carries one or two verse lines; they are given here one verse line per line. The words divided under the notes are joined here («ap-peared», «Tell-ing», «Faith-ful-ly», «pil-grim», «o-mens», «Toil-ing», «sigh-ing», «ral-ly», «cour-age», «Sav-iour», «gloom-y», «lov-ing», «Na-tions», «dis-tressed», «ru-mors», «pro-claim», «er-rors», «for-sake», «Wait-ing», «bless-ed», «wick-ed», «fail-ing», «dawn-ing», «pearl-y», «en-ter», «re-joice», «tid-ings», «Je-sus», «com-ing», «ap-pear», «re-spond», «Quick-ly») — the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`; «soon-com-ing» is written «soon-coming» (compound, see `uncertainties.md`). The print sets a thin space before «;» («come ;», «near ;», «way ;», «voice ;», «hope ;», «clear ;», «pear ;»); it is closed up here; the curly apostrophes and quotes are written straight («O'er», «life's», «Lord's», «"Quickly ... come."»). Spelling («Saviour», «rumors»), capitals and punctuation are the print's.
