⤢ Full screenWatch, ye saints, with eyelids waking;Lo! the powers of heav'n are shaking;Keep your lamps all trimm'd and burning,Ready for your Lord's returning.
Lo! he comes, lo! Jesus comes;Lo! he comes, he comes all glorious!Jesus comes to reign victorious,Lo! he comes, yes, Jesus comes.
Lo! the promise of your Saviour,Pardoned sin and purchased favor,Blood-wash'd robes and crowns of glory;Haste to tell redemption's story.
Kingdoms at their base are crumbling,Hark! his chariot wheels are rumbling;Tell, O tell of grace abounding,Whilst the seventh trump is sounding.
Nations wane, tho' proud and stately;Christ his kingdom hasteneth greatly;Earth her latest pangs is summing:Shout, ye saints, your Lord is coming.
Sinners, come, while Christ is pleading; Now for you he's interceding;Haste, ere grace and time diminishedShall proclaim the mystery finished.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1334» (large, left), title «JESUS COMES.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Jesus Comes.»); under it, centred, the epigraph «"Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints."—Jude 15.» (old-style figures); on the next line «MRS. PHŒBE PALMER.» at the left (the words, with the Œ ligature) and «WM. J. KIRKPATRICK.» at the right (the music). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All five stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«5.», between the staves of systems 1–2; each printed line carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «REFRAIN.» (bold capitals) stands over the start of system 3; the refrain words are one line under systems 3 and 4. In stanza 3 «Hark!» and in stanza 4 «Christ» (each at the start of the second half of the line) are set in a different, condensed bold face (wrong-font sorts). Syllable hyphens of the interlinear text are removed in the whole words («eye - lids» → «eyelids», «a-bounding» → «abounding», «char-iot» → «chariot»); the compound «Blood-wash'd» keeps its hyphen. Under the music, centred: «From "Songs of Redeeming Love," by per.»; at the bottom left the printer's signature mark «35» (not part of the hymn). The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («wak - ing ;», «Lo !»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
