⤢ Full screenI am waiting for the morningOf the blessed day to dawn,When the sorrow and the sadnessOf this changeful life are gone.
I am waiting, only waiting,Till this weary life is o'er;Only waiting for my welcome,From my Saviour on the other shore.
I am waiting, worn and wearyWith the battle and the strife,Hoping, when the warfare's over,To receive a crown of life.
Waiting, hoping, trusting ever,For a home of boundless love,Like a pilgrim looking forwardTo the land of bliss above.
Hoping soon to meet the loved onesWhere the many mansions be,Longing for the happy welcomeWhen my Saviour comes for me.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1340» (large, left), title «ONLY WAITING.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Only Waiting.»); under it, centred, the epigraph «"The Lord direct your hearts into . . . the patient waiting for Christ."—2 Thess. 3 : 5.» (three spaced periods for the omission; old-style figures); on the next line «W. G. IRVIN.» at the left (the words) and «J. H. FILLMORE.» at the right (the music), both in capitals and small capitals — the last letters of «FILLMORE.» are over-inked in this copy (no handwritten mark). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–2; each printed line of words carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3; the chorus is printed once, with two lines of words under systems 3–4 — the upper line for the soprano (long notes, the held syllables drawn out with spaced hyphens «wait - - - - ing,»), the lower line for alto, tenor and bass (eighths), its last words «wait-ing, waiting for my» in a smaller condensed type — and one line under system 5 for all voices. Words printed unbroken under two notes («Waiting,», «waiting,», «weary,», «welcome,») and words set closed up for want of room («meetthe lovedones», «Wherethe», «Whenmy», «thischange-ful», «andwea - ry») are given as ordinary words. Under the music, centred: «By permission Fillmore Bros., Cincinnati.». The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («o'er ;», «3 : 5»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
