⤢ Full screenShall we stand at His coming, His glorious coming,When the summer is over, and harvest is past? When the sheaves of his choosing he takes for his using,To the glorious kingdom forever to last?
Shall we stand at His coming, His glorious coming,When he gathers the wheat to his garner above? When in glory descending, with the angels attending,He returns for his jewels,—the price of his love?
When the Archangel's trumpet shall rend the broad heavens,And the millions who slumber immortal arise,Shall we stand with the holy, the meek and the lowly,Who in glory triumphant mount up to the skies?
When the loud lamentation breaks forth from creation,That the day of God's wrath and his fury has come,Shall we join that sad chorus while death hovers o'er us?Or in terror unbounded stand trembling and dumb?
Then the hope of possession will not be profession,For the lover of self will his motives behold;Only they who, obeying, have toiled, striving, praying,Shall ascend with the saints to the city of gold.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1343» (large, left), title «SHALL WE STAND AT HIS COMING?» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Shall We Stand at His Coming?»); under it, centred on two lines, the epigraph «"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of heaven ; but he that doeth / the will of my Father which is in heaven."—Matt. 7 : 21.» (old-style figures); on the next line «F. E. BELDEN.» at the left (the words, capitals and small capitals) and «EDWIN BARNES, by per.» at the right (the music, printed by permission). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–3; each verse line of a stanza is given here as one line (the print runs them on across the systems). «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over the middle of system 3; the chorus words begin on the second lyric line of system 3, after stanza 2's «skies?», and fill the one lyric line of systems 4 and 5. Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.». The print sets a thin space before some marks («heaven ;», «Matt. 7 : 21.», «us ?» in stanza 3); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Syllable hyphens are removed and words broken by them joined («Arch - angel's» → «Archangel's», «lam - en - tation» → «lamentation», «for - ev - er» → «forever»). Spelling, capitals («His coming» but «his choosing», «his love») and punctuation are the print's.
