1

He is coming, yes, he's coming, with the holy angel band;We rejoice to hear the message as it speeds by sea and land,When the gospel of the kingdom shall in all the world be preachedFor a witness to all nations, and its final triumph reached.

Chorus.

He is coming, coming, coming on the cloud,With a shout of triumph, and with trumpet loud; All the dead shall hear his voice, all the righteous shall rejoice; For he's coming in glory soon to reign.

2

He is coming, yes, he's coming with great majesty and power,While before and round about him fire and tempest shall devour:Yes, with more than pageant splendor as he rides upon the cloud,While the saints and holy angels shout with hallelujahs loud.

3

He is coming, not in secret, but like lightning in the sky,With the voice of the Archangel and the trump of God most high. Then the dead in Christ will hear his voice and from their graves arise,And with all the living righteous they shall meet him in the skies.

4

He is coming, yes, he's coming; heav'n and earth before him flee,But in all the new creation naught but righteousness shall be;Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed to shine,—When the Lord in dazzling glory reigns in righteousness divine.

5

He is coming! O what rapture! O what music to the ear!We anticipate his glory, and believe his kingdom near;We have waited for him patiently, and still our faith is strong,And we almost hear the angels shout "hosannas," loud and long.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1342» (large, left), title «COMING ON THE CLOUD.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Coming on the Cloud.»); under it a three-line epigraph in small old-style roman, «"A cloud received him out of their sight. * * This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."—Acts 1 : 9, 11. "Behold he cometh with clouds, and every eye shall see him." —Rev. 1 : 7.» (the two asterisks as printed; old-style figures); on the next line «WILLIAM BRICKEY.» at the left (the words) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (the music), capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All five stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«5.», between the staves of systems 1–3; the verse lines run on across the systems and are given here one verse line per line («round a- / -bout», «Arch- / an - gel», «cre- / a - tion» joined). «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over the start of system 4; the chorus words are the one line of system 4 (ordinary bold roman) and the one line of system 5 (a condensed bold type). Stanza 1 «coming, with» is set without a space (restored here). Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. F. Belden.» — the second initial is printed as an F, although the header reads «F. E. BELDEN.»; it is given as printed (see uncertainties.md). The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («band ;», «coming !», «Acts 1 : 9»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
