  • No. 1345
  • Tune WEIGHED AND WANTING.
  • Words F. E. B.
  • Music F. E. Belden.
  • Key F major
  • Time 4/4
  • 3 stanzas
1

When the Judge shall weigh our motivesFor eternal gain or loss,Shall we stand as gold before him,Or as vile and worthless dross?

2

Shall we hear the glad words spoken:"Faithful servant," and "well done,"Or the dread and awful sentence,"Thou art wanting," sinful one?

3

Shall we heed the Spirit's pleading,While for mercy we may call,Or delay till God's handwritingSeals the final doom of all?

REFRAIN

Weighed in the balance of the Lord,Weighed, weighed, and wanting;Weighed by the standard of his word,Weighed, weighed, and wanting.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: no running head on p. 556 (the page opens with the hymn); hymn number «1345» (large, left), title «Weighed and Wanting.» centred (condensed display face: the two «W» full capitals, the rest small capitals); under it the epigraph in one line of roman, «"Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting."—Dan. 5 : 27.» (old-style figures); on the next line «F, E. B.» at the left (words — with a comma after «F», as printed) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (music); «Slow.» in italics over the first bar. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», between the staves of systems 1–2; in stanza 1 the word «loss,» and in stanza 2 «done,"» (end of system 1) are set in a lighter roman than the rest of the bold lines. «REFRAIN.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3, and the refrain words are printed once, between the staves of systems 3–4. Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.». Each printed line of words carries two verse lines; they are given here one verse line per line. The words divided under the notes are joined here («mo-tives», «e-ter-nal», «spo-ken», «Spir-it's», «be-fore», «worth-less», «aw-ful», «sen-tence», «de-lay», «hand-writ-ing», «mer-cy», «sin-ful», «fi-nal», «bal-ance», «stand-ard») — the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`; «hand-writ - ing» (tight hyphen, then a spaced one) is joined as «handwriting». The print sets a thin space before «? ; :» («dross ?», «wanting ;», «spo-ken :»); it is closed up here; quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight.
