⤢ Full screenBeautiful valley of Eden,Sweet is thy noontide calm;Over the hearts of the weary,Breathing thy waves of balm.
Beautiful valley of Eden,Home of the pure and blest,How often amid the wild billowsI dream of thy rest, sweet rest!
Over the heart of the mournerShineth the golden day,Wafting the songs of the angelsDown from the far away.
There is the home of my Saviour; There, with the blood-wash'd throng,Over the highlands of gloryRolleth the great new song.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1346» (large, left), title «BEAUTIFUL VALLEY OF EDEN.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Beautiful Valley of Eden.»); under it, centred, the epigraph «"He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord."—Isa. 51 : 3.» (old-style figures; the «e» of the first «the» is a damaged sort); on the next line «REV. W. O. CUSHING.» at the left (the words) and «WM. F. SHERWIN.» at the right (the music). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», between the staves of systems 1–2; each printed line carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «REFRAIN.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3; the refrain words fill one line under systems 3–4; under its first line a second line «the pure and blest,» in small condensed bold type is the echo of tenor and bass, who sing «the» where the upper voices sing «and» and then move on «pure and blest,» while soprano and alto hold «blest,» — it is given after the refrain. «mourner», «Saviour;» and «Breathing» are printed unbroken under two notes. «Waft-ing», «high-lands» and «blood-wash'd» have a short closed-up hyphen; «noon - tide» an ordinary syllable hyphen (see uncertainties.md for «noontide», «highlands», «blood-wash'd»). Under the music, centred: «By permission.». The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («calm ;», «Saviour ;», «rest !»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
