  • Words Horatius Bonar.
  • Music Edwin Barnes.
  • Key E-flat major

1

Beyond the smiling and the weeping,I shall be soon;Beyond the waking and the sleeping,Beyond the sowing and the reaping,I shall be soon.

2

Beyond the blooming and the fading,I shall be soon;Beyond the shining and the shading,Beyond the hoping and the dreading,I shall be soon.

3

Beyond the parting and the meeting,I shall be soon;Beyond the farewell and the greeting,Beyond the pulse's fever-beating,I shall be soon.

4

Beyond the frost-chain and the fever,I shall be soon;Beyond the rock-waste and the river,Beyond the ever and the never,I shall be soon.

REFRAIN.

Love, rest, and home!Sweet, sweet hope!Lord, tarry not, Lord, tarry not,Lord, tarry not, but come.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1347» (large, left), title «BEYOND.» centred (condensed capitals with a larger initial); under it one line with «HORATIUS BONAR.» at the left (words), the epigraph «"And the days of thy mourning shall be ended."—Isa. 60 : 20.» (old-style figures) in the middle and «EDWIN BARNES.» at the right (music), capitals and small capitals; no meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. The four stanzas are interlinear, four lines between the staves of systems 1–2, numbered «1.»–«4.» in system 1; «REFRAIN.» stands over the treble after the heavy bar of system 2, and the refrain words are printed once (from the second lyric line of system 2 to the one line of system 3). Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by Edwin Barnes.» Syllable hyphens are joined («Be-yond», «weep-ing», «wak-ing», «shin-ing», «fe-ver», «sleep-iug», «shad-ing», «greet-ing», «riv-er», «ev-er», «nev-er», «tar-ry»); the compounds «frost-chain», «rock-waste» and «fever-beating» keep their hyphen (see `uncertainties.md`). The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («soon ;», «home !»); it is closed up here; quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight. «rest, and» is set closed up and is spaced here. Two letters are kept as printed although they are evident printer's slips: «sleepiug» (stanza 1, a turned «n») and «bope» (refrain, for «hope») — see `uncertainties.md`. Each stanza is given in its five verse lines (9.4.9.9.4 syllables), the refrain in four lines.
