⤢ Full screenThere's a land that is fairer than day,And by faith we can see it afar; For our Father waits over the way,To prepare us a dwelling place there.
In the sweet by and by,We shall meet on that beautiful shore,In the sweet by and by,We shall meet on that beautiful shore.
We shall sing on that beautiful shore,The melodious songs of the blest; And our spirits shall sorrow no more,—Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.
To our bountiful Father aboveWe will offer a tribute of praise,For the glorious gift of his love,And the blessings that hallow our days.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1353» (large, left), title «SWEET BY AND BY.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Sweet By and By.»); under it, centred on two lines, the epigraph «"And the inhabitants shall not say, I am sick ; the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their / iniquity."—Isa. 33 : 24.» (old-style figures); on the second line «S. FILLMORE BENNETT.» at the left (the words) and «J. P. WEBSTER.» at the right (the music), capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. The page opens with the last system of hymn 1352 («SHALL WE KNOW EACH OTHER THERE?—Concluded.»), which is not part of this hymn. All three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», between the staves of systems 1–2; each printed line of words carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3; the chorus is printed out in full over systems 3–4 (its two halves end «shore,» and «shore.»), with a second, lower line «by and by,» — the echo of tenor and bass, who enter after a rest while soprano and alto hold «sweet» and «by,» — given after the chorus. «blessings» (stanza 3) and «beautiful» (chorus, system 3) are printed unbroken under two and three notes. Several words are set closed up for want of room («There'sa», «Andour», «ousgift», «Weshall», «beautifulshore,»): ordinary spaces restored. Under the music, centred: «By permission O. Ditson & Co.». The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («far ;», «blest ;», «sick ;», «33 : 24»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
