⤢ Full screenWhen we hear the music ringingIn the bright celestial dome,When sweet angel voices, singing,Gladly bid us welcome home,To the land of ancient story,Where the dwellers know no care,—In that land of light and glory,—Shall we know each other there?
Shall we know each other? Shall we know each other?Shall we know each other? Shall we know each other there?
In italics under the upper line of the chorus, under each «Shall we» (for the last two stanzas):*We shallWe shallWe shallWe shall
Under the bass staff (tenor and bass, while soprano and alto hold «know»):Shall we knowShall we knowShall we know
At the foot of PDF 563:* For last two stanzas.
When the holy angels meet us,As we go to join their band,Shall we know the friends that greet usIn the glorious, happy land?Shall we see the same eyes shining,On us as in days of yore?Shall we feel the same arms twining,Fondly round us as before?
Yes, my earth-worn soul rejoices,And my weary heart grows light; For the sweet immortal voicesAnd th' angelic faces brightThat shall sing with us the storyOf redemption round the throne,Are with us the heirs of glory,And we'll know as we are known.
O ye weary, sad, and tossed ones!Droop not, faint not by the way;Ye shall join the loved and lost onesIn the land of perfect day.Harp-strings, touched by angel fingers,Murmur in my raptured ear;Evermore their sweet song lingers,"We shall know each other there!"
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1352» (large, left), title «SHALL WE KNOW EACH OTHER THERE?» centred (condensed display capitals with larger initials: «Shall We Know Each Other There?»); under it, centred, the epigraph «"Then shall I know even as also I am known."—1 Cor. 13 : 13.» (old-style figures; the verse quoted is 1 Cor. 13:12 — the print's «13 : 13» is kept); on the next line «W. M.» at the left (the words) and «REV. ROBERT LOWRY, by per.» at the right (the music; capitals and small capitals, the «Y» of «LOWRY» broken in the scan). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line, no running head on PDF 563. All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–4 of PDF 563; each printed line carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 5; the chorus runs over the page: PDF 564 opens with the running title «SHALL WE KNOW EACH OTHER THERE?—Concluded.» and one more system, then hymn 1353. The chorus has three lines of words: between the staves the line of soprano and alto (with leader dots under their held «know»), and under it, in italics, «*We shall» under each «Shall we» (four times: «We shall» on PDF 563 with the asterisk, then «We shall» three times) — the footnote at the foot of PDF 563, « For last two stanzas.» (italic), means that in stanzas 3 and 4 «We shall» replaces «Shall we»; under the bass staff, «Shall we know» (three times), the words of tenor and bass, who enter after a rest while soprano and alto hold «know», and then join the upper line at «each». The chorus is given once, after stanza 1, then its italic line and the tenor-bass line. Stanza 2: «twining,» is printed unbroken under two notes. Stanza 3: «th' an-gel - ic» — «th'» stands under one note and «an-gel» closed up under the next (the elision «th' an-» sung on one note). «earth-worn» and «Harp-strings,» are printed with a closed-up hyphen (compound words; kept hyphenated). In the last line of the chorus on PDF 564 the vowel of «know» is blotted (it looks like «knew» at low magnification; the bowl is closed like an «o») — read «know». Folio «562» at the foot of PDF 563. The print sets a thin space before «;», «?», «!» and «:» («light ;», «land ?», «ones !», «13 : 13»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
