⤢ Full screenOn Jordan's stormy banks I stand,And cast a wishful eyeTo Canaan's fair and happy land,Where my possessions lie.
We will rest in the fair and happy land,Just across on the evergreen shore;Sing the song of Moses and the Lamb by and by,And dwell with Jesus evermore.
O'er all those wide-extended plainsShines one eternal day; There Christ, the Sun, forever reigns,And scatters night away.
When shall I reach that happy place,And be forever blest? When shall I see my Father's face,And in his kingdom rest?
Filled with delight, my raptured soulWould here no longer stay;Tho' Jordan's waves around me roll,Fearless I'd launch away.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1360» (large, left), title «ON JORDAN'S STORMY BANKS.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «On Jordan's Stormy Banks.»); under it, in two lines of small roman, the epigraph «"These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth."—Heb. 11 : 13.» (old-style figures); on the next line «REV. SAMUEL STENNETT,» at the left (the words; the print ends it with a comma) and «T. C. O'KANE.» at the right (the music), both in capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–2; each printed line carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3; the chorus words are printed once, under systems 3–5: an upper line (the soprano's, with leader dots «. . .» after «shore;» under her held notes) and, set lower and shifted under it, a lower line «by and by,» (under the end of the first printed line) and «ev - er-green shore;» (under the second) — sung by the other voices while the soprano holds «land,» and «shore;»; it is given below after the chorus. The chorus lines are broken by the print in the middle of a word («Just a- / cross»); the halves are joined here. «Father's» is printed unbroken under two notes. In stanza 2 a spaced hyphen stands between «wide» and «ex» («wide - ex - tend - ed»): read as the compound «wide-extended» (see uncertainties.md). «king-dom», «Mo-ses» and «er-green» have a short closed-up hyphen (joined here: «kingdom», «Moses», «evergreen»). Under the music, centred: «By permission.». The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («day ;», «blest ?», «stay ;», «rest ?», «shore ;»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
