⤢ Full screenShall we meet beyond the river,Where the surges cease to roll?Where, in all the bright forever,Sorrow ne'er shall press the soul?
Shall we meet in that blest harbor,When our stormy voyage is o'er?Shall we meet and cast the anchorBy the fair, celestial shore?
Shall we meet in yonder city,Where the tow'rs of crystal shine?Where the walls are all of jasper,Built by workmanship divine?
Shall we meet with Christ, our Saviour,When he comes to claim his own?Shall we know his blessed favor,And sit down upon his throne?
Shall we meet, shall we meet,Shall we meet beyond the river?Shall we meet beyond the river,Where the surges cease to roll?
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1368» (large, left), title «SHALL WE MEET?» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Shall We Meet?»; a faint comma-shaped speck between «MEET» and «?» is not transcribed — see `uncertainties.md`); under it, centred on two lines, the epigraph «"For I reckon that the sufferings of this nresent time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall / be revealed in us."—Rom. 8 : 18.» (old-style figures; «nresent» is the print's, for «present» — a printer's slip kept as printed); on the next line «HORACE L. HASTINGS.» at the left (the words) and «ELIHU S. RICE.» at the right (the music), capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line, no copyright line; folio «578». The four stanzas are interlinear, four lines between the staves of systems 1–2, numbered «1.»–«4.» in system 1; each system carries two verse lines of each stanza, given here one verse line per line (each printed line split at the capital that begins its second verse line). «REFRAIN.» stands over the treble at the start of system 3, and the refrain words are printed once (one line in systems 3–4). Words set close for want of room («ourSaviour», «tialshore», «histhrone») are spaced here; syllable hyphens are joined; the thin space of the epigraph's «8 : 18» is closed up; quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's («Saviour», «favor», «harbor», «tow'rs», «ne'er», «o'er»; «an-chor» with no comma).
