1

We shall meet beyond the river,In that glorious land of bliss,Where the Son shall reign foreverAs the King of Righteousness; We shall meet in yonder city,With its walls of jasper, bright,We shall shout our songs of triumph,No more sorrow, pain, nor night.

Refrain.

We shall meet in yonder cityBy and by, and by and by;We shall sing our songs foreverRound our Saviour's throne on high.

2

We shall meet with those departedFrom this world of sin and strife,Meet no longer broken hearted,But with an eternal life.We shall meet and share the gloryOf that countless, happy throng; We shall tell redemption's story,Sing his praises, loud and long.

3

We shall meet with Christ our Saviour,Soon to come and take his own; Then we'll share his blessed favor,And shall know as we are known;O the joy, the exultation,Of the saints then truly his!O the glorious transformation,When we see him as he is.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1371» (large, left), title «WE SHALL MEET.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «We Shall Meet.»); under it, centred on two lines, the epigraph «"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."—Rev. 21 : 4.» (old-style figures); on the next line «MRS. E. W. SAWYER.» at the left (the words) and «D. S. HAKES.» at the right (the music), both in capitals and small capitals. No meter, no reference line; at the foot of the page «By permission O. Ditson & Co.» and the folio «580». The three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», between the staves of systems 1–4; each printed line carries one verse line of each stanza. «REFRAIN.» (bold capitals) stands over system 5; the refrain words fill one line under system 5 and under the one system at the top of the next page («WE SHALL MEET.—Concluded.»), and are given once, after stanza 1. Syllable hyphens are joined («be-yond», «riv - er», «glo-rious», «for - ev - er», «Right-eous-ness», «yon - der», «cit - y», «jas - per», «tri - umph», «sor - row», «de - part - ed», «long - er», «brok - en», «heart - ed», «e - ter - nal», «glo - ry», «hap - py», «re - demption's», «sto - ry», «prais - es», «Sav-iour», «bless - ed», «fa - vor», «ex - ul - ta-tion», «tru - ly», «glo · rious» — its hyphen a short round stub —, «trans - for - ma - tion»); «countless,» and «demption's» are printed as whole words under two notes. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («own ;», «throng ;», «his !», «by ;»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. An ink note in a former owner's hand runs across the authors' line («Our last hymn at … service …»); it is not printed text and is not transcribed here (see uncertainties.md).
