About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1391» (large, left), title «THE TEMPERANCE CALL.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); under it the epigraph «"Every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things."—1 Cor. 9: 25.» on one line; then «ANON.» at the left (words) and «FRANZ ABT.» at the right (music), capitals and small capitals; no meter, no reference line, no running head, no permission line. The three stanzas are interlinear, three lines between the staves of systems 1–2, numbered «1.»–«3.» in system 1; each stanza is six verse lines (5.5.7.5.5.7 syllables, rhymes call/all, cry/nigh, land/hand), given here as the verse lines of the poem (the staff break falls after the fourth verse line, «na-tive land / Lift her»). «CHORUS.» is printed over the treble staff in the middle of system 2. The chorus has two lines of words: the upper line, between the staves, sung by soprano, alto and tenor, and a lower line printed under the bass staff and shifted, sung by the bass in imitation; the chorus is given here once, after stanza 1: first the upper line, then the bass's line. Syllable hyphens are joined («na-tive», «Fath-er-land», «re-solved», «u-nited», «cru-el», «mon-ster»). The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («cry ;», «polls !», «save ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («temp'rance», «beck'ning», «temp'rate», «Ne'er», «o'er», «Fatherland»).
