1

Master, the tempest is raging! The billows are tossing high! The sky is o'ershadowed with blackness; No shelter or help is nigh;"Carest thou not that we perish?"—How canst thou lie asleep,When each moment so madly is threat'ningA grave in the angry deep?

Chorus.

"The winds and the waves shall obey my will,Peace, be still!Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea,Or demons, or men, or whatever it be,No water can swallow the ship where liesThe Master of ocean, and earth, and skies; They all shall sweetly obey my will;Peace, be still! Peace, be still! They all shall sweetly obey my will;Peace, peace, be still!"

2

Master, with anguish of spiritI bow in my grief to-day;The depths of my sad heart are troubled;O, waken and save, I pray!Torrents of sin and of anguishSweep o'er my sinking soul; And I perish! I perish! dear Master;O hasten, and take control.

3

Master, the terror is over,The elements sweetly rest;Earth's sun in the calm lake is mirrored,And heaven's within my breast;Linger, O blessed Redeemer,Leave me alone no more; And with joy I shall make the blest harbor,And rest on the blissful shore.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1392» (large, left), title «PEACE, BE STILL!» centred (condensed display capitals and small capitals, «Peace, Be Still!»); under it the epigraph «"Jesus rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace ! be still !"—Mark 4 : 39.» (small roman, old-style figures); on the next line «MISS M. A. BAKER.» at the left (words) and «H. R. PALMER, by per.» at the right (music, «by per.» = by permission). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. The hymn fills PDF 601 (printed 600) and ends at the top of PDF 602 (printed 601) under the running title «PEACE, BE STILL!—Concluded.». All three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», between the staves of systems 1–3; each printed line of words carries several verse lines, given here one verse line per line (the division follows the musical phrases: m1–2, m2–4, m4–6, m6–8, m9–10, m11–12, m12–14, m14–16). In stanza 1 the word «o'er-» ends system 1 and «shadowed» opens system 2: one word, «o'ershadowed», joined here. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 4; the chorus is printed once, opening and closing with a double quote (the words of Christ); in its fourth bar the upper line has leader dots under the held notes — «Peace, . . be still! . .» — while a second line, printed under it, «be still! peace, be still!», is sung by tenor and bass on their own notes («Peace, be still! peace, be still!», sharing the first «Peace,» of the upper line); the leader dots are not reproduced in the verse below (they are in lyrics_syllables.txt) and the lower line is given after the chorus. The print sets a thin space before «!», «?», «;» and «:»; it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's («to-day», «threat'ning», «heaven's», «harbor», «dear Master», «O, waken» with a comma, «O hasten» without).
