About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1408» (large, left), title «MOUNT OLIVE.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals), «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); no epigraph, no author, no meter, no reference to the chapter. A chant of the Beatitudes in two systems: five verses are printed under system 1 (Matt. 5:3, 5, 7, 9, 11) and five under system 2 (Matt. 5:4, 6, 8, 10, 12), so that reading the printed lines alternately — system 1 line 1, system 2 line 1, system 1 line 2, … — gives the verses in their sung order (Matt. 5:3-12), as below. The first words of each verse are recited on the reciting chord; «Blessed are ye when men shall revile you and speak / all manner of evil against you,» and «Blessed are they that do hunger / and thirst for righteousness:» are each printed in two lines for want of room and are one verse line here. Over the end of system 2 the italic word «Final.» marks the closing «A-men, A-men.», printed once on the line of «Blessed are the pure in heart:». Syllable hyphens are joined («king-dom», «in-her-it», «oh-tain», «mer-cy», «false-ly», «right-eous-ness'», «re-ward», «A-men»); the four spaced dots after «my» («for my . . . . sake.») only show that «my» is held over three notes and are not words. The print sets a thin space before «:» («spirit : for»); it is closed up here; apostrophes are written straight. Two letters are kept as printed although they are evident printer's slips: «ohtain» (for «obtain») and «he» (for «be») — an «h» sort for «b» in two adjacent lines; see `uncertainties.md`. Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.»
