Words

Beyond the smiling and the weeping,I shall be soon;Beyond the waking and the sleeping,Beyond the sowing and the reaping,I shall be soon.

Refrain.

Love, rest and home! sweet home!Lord, tarry not, but come.

Beyond the blooming and the fading,I shall be soon;Beyond the shining and the shading,Beyond the hoping and the dreading,I shall be soon.

Beyond the parting and the meeting,I shall be soon;Beyond the farewell and the greeting,Beyond the pulse's fever beating,I shall be soon.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1409» (large, left), title «BEYOND THE SMILING AND THE WEEPING.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals), «W. A. TARBUTTON, by per.» at the right on the line below (capitals and small capitals, then «by per.» in lower case); no author, no meter, no reference line. Stanza 1 is printed between the staves of system 1 in a condensed type, in two staggered lines for want of room («1. Beyond the smiling and the» / «weeping, I shall be soen;» …); «Refrain.» stands over the treble at the start of system 2, with its words on one line. Stanzas 2 and 3 are printed below the music in two columns (separated by a rule), numbered «2» and «3» without a full stop. Syllable hyphens are joined («tar-ry»). The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («soon ;», «home !»); it is closed up here; apostrophes are written straight. One letter is kept as printed although it is an evident printer's slip: «soen;» (stanza 1, second line, for «soon;») — see `uncertainties.md`. Each stanza is given in its five verse lines (9.4.9.9.4 syllables), the refrain in two lines.
