⤢ Full screenThy holy day's returning
Our hearts exult to see,
And, with devotion burning,
Ascend, great God, to thee.
To-day, with purest pleasure,
Our thoughts from earth withdraw;
We search for heavenly treasure,
We learn thy holy law.
We join to sing thy praises,
O God of Sabbath-day!
Each voice in gladness raises
Its loudest, sweetest lay.
Thy richest mercies sharing,
Inspire us with thy love;
By grace our souls preparing
For nobler praise above.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «247» (large) with the reference line «492, 330, 195,» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 492, 330 or 195; the line ends with a comma); stanza 1 stands at the foot of the left column of p. 82, below hymn 246, and stanza 2 at the top of the right column, with «Ray Palmer.» in italics after stanza 2. The first word «THY» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («withdraw ;», «Sabbath-day !», «love ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («day's»). «To-day» and «Sabbath-day» are hyphenated inside the line, as printed. Lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is 7s & 6s. D., 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
