⤢ Full screenAll praise to thee, eternal Lord,
Clothed in a garb of flesh and blood;
Choosing a manger for thy throne,
While worlds on worlds are thine alone!
Once did the skies before thee bow;
A virgin's arms contain thee now:
Angels, who did in thee rejoice,
Now listen to thy infant voice.
A little child, thou art our guest,
That weary ones in thee may rest;
Forlorn and lowly is thy birth,
That we may rise to heaven from earth.
Thou comest in the darksome night,
To make us children of the light;
To make us, in the realms divine,
Like thy own angels round thee shine.
All this for us thy love hath done,
By this to thee our love is won;
For this we tune our cheerful lays,
And tell our thanks in songs of praise.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «CHRIST—FIRST ADVENT.» (hymn 284 opens the section); hymn number «284» (large), tune name «HARMONY GROVE. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «HENRY K. OLIVER.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «All»; under the staves «e - ter - nal», «Choos - ing», «man - ger» and «a - lone!» are hyphenated. The reference line «256, 223, 47.» (italic) stands under the music, above stanza 2; stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column. «Martin Luther.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («bow ;», «now :», «rest ;», «light ;», «won ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «virgin's» is written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
